Project Update January 25th, 2010

Greetings,

Thanks again for your interest and input so far in helping craft a Trails Plan for the Kodiak Island Borough.  The trails planning team is taking another opportunity to update you on our progress, highlight opportunities for you to participate in the planning process, and let you know about next steps in the process.  Progress to date includes:

-          Conducted a kickoff meeting with staff to discuss project issues, schedule and preliminary opportunities.  A summary of the meeting can be found here (Kickoff Meeting Summary (September 1, 2009)).

-           Met with key stakeholders in a series of meetings to identify priority trails planning issues and needs.  A summary of what we learned in the interviews can be found here (Stakeholder Interviews Summary (September 1st - 2nd)).

-          Gathered existing information about trail locations and conditions, as well as other related background studies and information.  See the Resources page of this Web site for more information (http://www.kodiaktrailsplan.com/project_materials/).

-          Developed a set of Trail Management Objectives.  A draft description of these objectives can be found HERE.

-          Preparing  an inventory of trail conditions.  Island Trails Network is current assisting with this task, collecting data on trail conditions as weather allows.  So far over 80 miles of trails have been inventoried with GPS which is approximately 30% of the estimated network.   Information about the inventory will be completed in the coming months.

-          Assessing use and priorities for winter trail use.  The consultant team project manager and Borough staff will meet with the borough’s Park and Recreation Advisory Committee and other interested parties to discuss these issues on February 9th at 7 p.m. in the Borough Conference Room.  You and others will ideas or information about winter trail use are encouraged to attend this meeting and voice your opinions.

Next steps in the process include completing the trails inventory work, including an inventory of winter conditions, refine draft trail management objectives, and create draft trail design guidelines.  A community meeting to review and discuss the results of these efforts and preliminary trails planning recommendations will be held in spring (2010).

If you have any comments or questions about the trails planning process, please visit the Web site (http://www.kodiaktrailsplan.com/contacts/) where you can leave feedback or contact project staff.  Thanks for your continued interest and involvement in this important process.
